A carpenter cursed the weight of the toolbox
every morning for nineteen years.
Then the work dried up for a season
and the box stayed in the van.
Coming back to it in the spring, the carpenter found
that every ladder on site had grown a rung,
and worked out, somewhere near the top of one,
who had been carrying whom.
