In a coastal town in February the bus did not come,
so a lifter walked twenty-five minutes through sleet,
squatted three sets of five at a weight they had done for eight the week before,
and went home.

Years later a coach asked what the best session of that winter had been,
and got that one, immediately, without hesitation.

The lifter then had to spend some time explaining
that it had also, beyond any argument, been the worst.
